Feedback from client
MVI 0268 from amelia williams on Vimeo.
When presenting our pitch we asked a few questions and collected many improvements and changes to our idea that I believe will benefit us when filming. Here are a few points that he put forward;
How long would you like our video to be?
How long our other corporate videos that you have researched? (around 4/5 minutes) well I think 3 minutes at the most, because we could send this to other schools year 11 assembles and i think 3 minutes will be better for them whilst they are watching.
Would you like us to film as a whole group or individual corporate videos and you can choose?
It might be interesting to film as a whole group so you can mix different ideas together and split the work load, but it could be interesting because your ideas are very different so you can create 4 very different videos.
Would you like to include different interviews in the video? if so who?
Target people who are inviting to the school, people like heads and tutors who are close to the students in laswap. Make sure that you also target different individuals from different backgrounds and who study different lessons.
Would you like to see an establishing shot of each one of the schools?
Yes, seeing all schools well benefit the audience, showing the schools that are involved with Laswap.
What background music do you think would suit this corporate video idea?
I have no thoughts on background basic, i have to tell when the video is complete and how it works with the visuals
Would you like us to focus on higher education?
Yes, that is a big selling point that Laswap has, there is an officer that goes from school to school helping people in year 12 and year 13 with UCAS and other aspects of higher education, which is a good thing to show in this video for Laswap.
Would you like us to film particular subjects, if so which ones?
Well Laswap is know from the vast subjects we hold, which i believe is too many to show is a 3 minute video, so a list of the subjects would be a good idea so year 11 students are shown the subjects they can study.
Something I would add is that many students find it intimidating when joining because of their being 4 schools, how would you show that all schools are joined and that its easy to show different friendship groups.
When tracking students into different schools I will show them meeting up with other students from the different Laswap schools, showing that Laswap is a little community.

Here is my second interaction with one of my clients, in this meeting I am talking about the different ideas that me and my partner have come up with for our LaSWAP corporate video, she is then feeding back on what she think is going well as what she thinks I should include to make it more effective for a Media viewer.

1C- How will this brief give me the chance to develop my skills as a Media Practitioner?
Self development:
When looking into the different skills I am taking on when following and looking into a brief, I feel like I am gaining knowledge of Media contracts and legal documents that are important and necessary in the Media industry. With this I gain more experience and understanding of what the Media industry is like behind the camera.
Putting this onto my CV will broaden my Media skills and knowladge that will be more effective when showing it to potential employers, showing the different professional skills I have picked up from different meetings with clients, sticking to a time limit and work load schedule to keep the client happy. Also learning the different terminology for different briefs and research helping me develop my all over Media skill. Also improving my basic skills like teamwork and leadership, which also come in handy when taking on future projects.
Whilst developing the project, you pick up more skills relating to filming and editing by using certain techniques that are mainly used for that type of video.

Here is a section of my CV that I put together in year
12; I have not put any skills about my Media development over the year of study
in this course. When learning the different skills in this brief I could start
to put together a CV with more in depth information of what I am capable of
doing in the Media industry and how I can conduct certain Media techniques, for
example how I have developed and broadened my research skills, which will help
me in later projects that I will take on. How I can deal with a client in a
professional standard.
I believe I will gain and train up my communication
skills when pitching to my client and my partner, as well as collecting
research skills when looking into different corporate videos and different
codes and conventions. When thinking and putting together different ideas will
I believe will enhance my planning skills that I can use in future projects by
creating and putting together storyboards and shot lists. When me and my partner
have finalised our production and edited to a standard the client would like I
also could include in my CV how I have gained more experience and skill with
filming and working on a production, which will come in handy when I take on
future projects later in life.
When creating this video for my client I will be using
digital Media, which helps me with using different types of Media in other
projects I will work on, my creativity also thrive when spending time on this
project by thinking and coming up with different ideas to create an interesting
production for my client. During my pitch I would hope to work on my song
I believe that i will gain many skills that I can add
to my CV to create a very interesting base and skills list for different Media employees.
Due to me taking on this project my research skills have improved because of
the different briefs I had to look into to have a better knowledge of the
project himself. Because of this my research skills have become quicker and easier
to point out.
I have also gained knowledge
a quick understanding on how to use digital Media like: Blogger, Premier Pro, storyboard
and scripts on special Media programs, which has helped me become quicker when
starting new projects.

1b- How do I work to a brief with a client?
The brief that I will be working to for this assignment is one for the corporate video to promote the 6th form of Laswap. The client I will be working with is Mr. Quirke the Director of 6th form at Acland Burghley. I will be presenting the Laswap 6th form in a positive and informative light, which will come across in the editing and main concept of the project video. When analysing the brief I will be focusing on the following things; legal and ethical, regulatory, amendments to proposed final project, budget and conditions, which I will be discussing and negotiating with the client. Also asking and debating about the mise en scene, camera and sound linking it to the positive light of the video. If I fail to follow the brief given and the dissuasions and changes that the client has made then I could face legal action.
Constraints (ethical, legal and regulatory)
When looking at the brief I have to decide the different aspects that I will need to focus on for this corporate video to be a success. I have to pay attention to the ethical side of filming and creating this video, making sure I am not adding anything that is seen to be offensive to anyone watching or who is involved. This could be in the way I address certain people or places in the video. I will also have to pay attention to the legal side of creating this video, looking onto copyright issues if I use certain songs or brands within the video, making sure I gain permission from the owner of the song/brand.
If I am going to be filming anyone to talk about the 6th form area or who are going to be in the background of some establishing shots, I will need their permission if they are over the age of 18 if younger then parents permission.
I will also look into the health and safety for the cast and crew involved in the production, doing a risk assessment before filming seeing and checking any hazards that can cause the people involved harm.
When looking into regulation I have rearched into the company Ofcom and ASA who look into all adverts that are shown in different types of Media. I have been looking at their codes and conventions for different videos and films that go onto T.V. If the client decides that he would like to broadcast the project we have created I have to focus on the rules that Ofcom and ASA have put up, which means we have to focus on copyright issues, aspects in the footage that could be distressing or offensive to viewers. Also paying attention to the information I am trying to give out about the 6th form, giving truthful facts about the college and the lessons that are available.
Here is the code and conventions that the ASA go by.
ASA:
The ASA make sure hat all adverts that have been broadcasted are acceptable to be shown, making sure they are honest, legal, decent, and truthful and benefit the audience watching.
The main vales that they look into whilst checking adverts are:
- Fair and respectable to all, making sure know one watching will find anything that they are seeing rude and disrespectful to a certain race religion gender and sexualty.
-Accessible and helpful, Making sure that their advert holds a purpose, and help out an the consumers with what they are looking to buy.
- Also making sure that none of the adverts break or include some of the issues mentioned in the codes.
Budget: (Amendments to budget and conditions)
Project:
Because I will be hiring and using locations from the 6th form there will be no fees or budget needed, which will be explained and discussed to the client in further meetings. Finding out the main concept and path that we would like to take this corporate video will lead us to find out a rough duration time of the project. I will make sure I will be organised with my meetings and workload so I can reach the deadline the client has put forward.
When looking at the concept of the main project, i will be talking with my client on what he would like to include, what people he would like to have talk in the video, where he would like mot of the video to be located. As well as what path he would like to take with the video, showing more of the facilities or the variety of subjects that are presented in the 6th form.
The certain ideas I would like to put forward to the client are;

Budget: (Amendments to budget and conditions)
When looking into my chosen brief, I will be finding out some of my own research to present to the client when starting the meeting and discussions about the project. When looking into the budget without the client I have come to a conclusion that there will be no personal finance needed for the creation of the video, due to cameras and other equipment being hired from Acland Burghley school free of charge. Making our way to the different locations whilst filming is also covered due to the crew and cast having free bus passes as well as the other locations of Laswap 6th form being in walking distance. Filming at the location has also been covered, there is no need to rent or pay for the time in the location due to Laswap owning the facilities. The people in the video will be volunteers who have offered to take part in the creation without pay.
When talking to the client in further meetings I will be discussing my research and finding as well as taking in any changes and inputs he has about the budget.
Conditions:
I have not been in contact yet with my client to arrange a meeting so we have not explained and discussed the different conditions of the project. When the meeting is scheduled we will be disccusing any changes he and I would like to make with the filming and the main concept of the project, we will also be getting into the regulations, where the client wants this video to go after the final edit has been put together. If he wants to put it on a certain media, does he want to give it to another company, or keep it for just presentations and open days for year 11 students. When talking to the client in further meetings I will be discussing my research and finding as well as taking in any changes and inputs he has about the budget.

The certain ideas I would like to put forward to the client are;
- Using interviews with people who work with and for the Laswap 6th form, asking their opinions and positives and negatives views about the college.
- Showing different shots of the new study environment in the four schools connected to laswap, using establishing shot, panning and tracking to advertise and show off this new area for the 6th form students.
- Using google maps as the transition stages between each school to create a smooth effect when watching
- Tracking and following people from different school and different lessons seeing how a laSWAP student goes around a normal day.
- Using high contrast lighting when filming interviews, (like the Apple promotional video) so the interviewee is the main focuses.
- Editing text on top of visuals to again create a smooth effect when watching.

1A - Different types of briefs
Cooperative- This is a brief between multiple companies that the client has drawn up. This creates more perspectives for the final project. It can also be negotiated if there is any disagreement between companies/clients. Seen to be prone to many disagreements and conflict but can also spark off creativity to happen between companies.
Here is an example of a Cooperative
brief from the state university of Middle Tennessee, this brief is between the
client, which in this case will be the University and the employer, which is
staff members. This brief shows the rules and certain tasks to follow when
thinking about their students learning in the university coming up with
different strategies on how to take on students and their learning.
Contractual
Brief - This is a legal document, which is
created between an employee and a client. It outlines the duties that will be
required by the company, and how they organise their work. It is a document,
which states the expectations of the client, their prices as well as the
payment terms. A media company is employed by the client in order to complete a
project, they must follow the contract, if they fail to do so the company could
face legal action.
Here
is a contractual brief of an Advertising/ marketing agency agreement, this
brief shows what the employ wants to client to undertake when being handed the
job. This brief highlights the expectations, this example shows that they want
their client to be taking on 'provide consulting services to customer in the
form of an analysis of customers current products, goods or services as it
relates to customers’ present and/or target markets.' if failed to follow along
with this contract and the tasks its asking you to follow, legal actions will
take place.
Negotiated
Brief- This is where the client and the
employer will come to an agreement upon the brief of the project, which
includes the final ideas of both employer, as well as client. They can be
helpful to change perspective or enlighten fallbacks but can also be a waste of
time and can delay production targeted finishing date. They both have to agree
on the brief or it will cause problems in the future.
Here
is an example of a negotiated brief. This is between a freelance photographer
and the client, in this brief shows the agreement between them and what is to
be done for this project. The certain things agreed in this brief is the
certain amount of publication given to the client. As well as different
copyright issues that the freelance photographer is putting forward about his
work, when given to the client.
Formal
Brief- A document that includes information
about what the client wants the company to achieve, straightforward document,
which refrains from including any unwanted information. This brief many not
always be classified as a legal document. This is a strong brief where the
client will outline everything that is needed to create a clear path for both the client and the company, allowing easy communication and alowing insructions to be clear and easy to understand. Clients are allowed to discuss changes or issues
during the negotiation period.
Here
I have found an example of a formal brief, it is not from the creative media
industry, as I could not locate one. Here it shares information on what needs
to be done for different school grades. By Joseph Mark Warner. This shows
different objectives that are needed to be done to finish the project as well
as certain bits of information that is important to understand whilst taking on
the project. This document is straight forward, which no unwanted
information.
Informal Brief- This is less professional then that of a traditional brief, it outlines
the project verbally, and this brief does not require any means of written
document. it is an open brief between a client and company where ideas are
shared to ultimately one to an agreement of work. Normally taken in note format
but can sometimes be verbal. This brief isn't widely used by companies due to
the lack of text contracting. Normally used in the ideas stage where the format
brief s constructed after.
Here is an example of an informal brief,
it is taken in note form about their oral discussion about their idea, talking
about different dates and certain skills needed to take on this project for the
client. It also shows the requirement that is needed to create a well thought
out project.

Commission Brief - This is when a large corporation, such as the 'Daily Mail', employ an independent company to create their project/ product. After the product has been made the larger company may go on to use the product of an external client. That external company will then pay the independent company for making the product.
Tender Brief - A client will produce an advertisement stating that they require a media
product to be created. A potential employer initiates a brief, a budget as well
as a proposal, which is pitched to a client. The client decides upon the most
impressive proposal.
Here is an example of a tender brief
from the Shetland arts, wanting a new product for Creative financing in
Scotland. This example gives information about what needs to be presented when
giving their pitch, what needs to be addressed and thought about. Here they
talk about the financing about the Shetland arts and what things that this
employ needs to focus on.
Competition Brief - A brief, which is created in order to be accessible to all the production companies which are participating. Each corporation completes their own brief, they are then judged and the most impressive one wins and is taken into publication with the client.
Here
is an example of a competition brief, using an illustration to show what the
brief and what they are asking the client to do. Paul WS Anderson calls this
example ‘The shot’ a film competition for clients jugged.
Cooperative/ constructed Brief -
A constructed brief is seen as more a of a legal
brief that has to be done or else legal action will be taken, unlike
cooperative which is more for a employer talking to more then one client. It is
also less relaxed when it comes to following the brief and reaching the objections
at a certain time. Constructive is more for a one on one contract with the
client and the project.
Formal/ Informal Brief -This brief has differences from an informal brief due
to an informal brief being taken down in note form, which is normally done
orally between client and employee. Their is no need for a document to be
written unlike a formal brief where the document has to include information
about the project but it sill not classified as a legal document.
Tender/ commission Brief- A tender brief is to invite and bring in certain media
companies to work on their project, making them produce a pitch to present to
the main company, talking about budget and creating a proposal. A commission
brief is a large well-known company to a independent media company of
their choice with no pitching process to take on their project.
Competition brief/Informal brief - A competition brief is a document that shows
illustration and less written information for a competition for other
production companies. Tone is shown as very relaxed and less formal. In comparison,
and informal brief in very relaxed and does not need a written document and can
outline the project verbally. Smiley, both brief if information is taken down
is shown in note form.
Tender brief/ Formal brief- A Tender brief produces a document like an
advertisement, showing what they want from a Media company, they then put forward
their proposal and produce a pitch. A formal brief also has information for a
Media company, showing them what they want from them and different aspects they
have to stand by. However they do not ask for a pitch or proposal from the
Media Company.
Many briefs have different ways of communicating with
the client, allowing information to be communicated via a legal document to a
verbal discussion.
