Proposal and pitch

Purpose and research:  Identify potential areas of interest.
The areas that I find of most interested to my purpose of  an informative and recruitment interview is the voice of the younger cadets in the division, trying to see why they think St John ambulance is a good organisation to join. I will be also getting in contact with Officers and Youth leaders of Highgate division to hear why they think cadets should join the organisation. Also giving small bits of information about the history and future of 'SJA'.

Background history of St John:  http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/about-us/our-history.aspx'St John 'Ambulance is the UK’s leading provider of first aid training. As a charity, our volunteers provide vital first aid cover for the public ‒ at national events like the London Marathon, and locally at football matches and village fêtes. St John Ambulance is also a youth organisation: more than half of our 23,000 volunteers are under 25.'

-'Our proud heritage goes all the way back to 11th century Jerusalem, where the first Knights of St John set up a hospital to care for sick pilgrims.'

-'Each year we appoint a County Cadet of the Year, and they attend a residential weekend event, where a National Cadet of the Year is chosen. You can take part in camps and adventure activities.'

-'The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem originated in a hospice founded around 1070 to care for pilgrims. The brothers and sisters of the Hospital, which was recognized as a religious Order by the Pope in 1113, nursed the poor and sick of any faith. The brothers also took on the role of defending Christians. When Jerusalem was lost in 1187, they established their headquarters in Acre on the coast of Palestine, before moving to Cyprus and then in 1309 to Rhodes. In 1530 they were given Malta, which they governed until they were expelled by Napoleon in 1798.'

- St Johns ambulance was founded in 1922, and has grown to one of the biggest youth organisations in the united kingdom.

- 127 years of first aid delivery

Purpose of research

1.     There are many reasons why you should research your idea. You need to understand and really look into your target audience to understand what they are most interested in. This helps you conduct your interview and direct it into a way, which is effective, and grabs the attention and the views from that target audience you are aiming for. You also need to see what questions you are going to ask. Are you getting the right information out of your interviewee? Is your interviewee the right person subject for your task? Are they clear enough for your interviewee to give a direct and clear answer? You also need to think about how to put certain ideas across about the subject you are talking about. For example finding more information about the cadets and how their numbers have decreased, to ask suitable questions, to the different people I will be asking. I also need to know what lessons take place at the Monday sessions, which helps me understand what the different people I am interviewing are talking about. I also need to make sure I research different radio interviews I would like to refer to when creating my own, to help with they way I communicate with my audience and how to style this interview. If i am talking to someone who is part of an organisation, i have to know and look up imprint facts about it. For example with St Johns ambulance i have to know the history of how St John started, how the cadet youth group came along, and also more about the division itself and how that first started, This helps me ask more in depth questions about the subject i will be asking getting more in depth answers that will be a better radio package for my audience and for myself getting the best out of my interview. I should also look more into the certain people i will be interviewing, because they are certain ranks in this youth group, i should find out more of there person and how they got their rank and their job in the youth division.

2.
Here is an example of a radio package that is a primary source of research; this is because the information being told is from the celebrity herself, which in this case is Cher Lloyd. It also shows small signs of secondary research talking about another person in the interview from someone else. Using a primary source for an interview, which is informational is more reliable because you are talking to the main person directly, making sure that all information given is not a rumor or made up. This makes a successful radio package because an audience is getting the information from the main source making what they say more believable. The target audience for this interview is for around 13-19 year olds due to the radio package this interview is on and the celebrity that is being interviewed. This is helpful when I start thinking about my radio package, because mine is aimed at the same target audience, helping me with ideas and a structure to lead me with my radio package.  This interview has a small amount of Conflict and controversy, because Scttro the interviewer isolated Cher Lloyd during a live acoustic performance calling her fans 'Wankers' when introducing her on stage. Having this conflict attracts the attention of an audience and industry.

A radio package that i am going to look into for inspiration when recording and putting together my radio interview is an interview from Radio4's section 'Secondary' with the presenter Maria Campbell interviewing a head teacher from Regents high secondary school. When interviewing she uses many open questions, asking him questions about how he runs the school and the changes that are going to come in the future for this school. She uses single and multiple direct questions in a light hearted tone  to make the atmosphere feel comfortable when talking and sharing ideas. I am also intrested in the way that the radio package was edited, using jingles at the start when introducing herself and the show, creating a relaxed and fun feeling when an audience listening.
3.

I also have another example of a Radio package that I would like to go by and take things out of, which is an interview with a group the Vamps, here again they ask many open questions, and multiple question to get out more then one bit of information, trying to get information and to promote them as an artist as well as recent albums they have created. Again this is also a comical light hearted to create a comfortable atmosphere for them both as well as an audience watching. This is again something i would like to go by because of the techniques that are being used because of the target audience that this interview is being targeted at.

Assessment 2: Pre Production

For my assignment I will be creating a 5 minute long radio package advertising and informing young people about the youth organisation St john Ambulance. I will be pitching that the placing of this radio package will be on Radio 4 on the segment 'Secondary' I will call this segment 'Amelia's Corner' and will be talking to different young people in and outside of this origination. I will hope to raise awareness and create interest with this radio package without being biased with my questions and answers.

1. When starting my interview, I want to set my target audience for 13- 17 years olds. The target audience for my radio package is the social demographic DE, which is what social category depending on work and living for each individual, this is because most of my audience are to young to be employed, if they are employed then they would have little skill or no skill. Also I believe my target audience would mainly be mainstreamers and aspires, people who look up to to certain idols, wanting to do more with themselves as well as taking on activities that other people are now taken on. My target audience will also be mainly British with mixed ethnicity. I have also been focusing on the different hobbies and intreats of my target audience looking at different medium outlet like 'YouTube'  and looking more in depth at the certain channels they are subscribed to like Jenna Marbles and Shane Dawson. And certian love celebrity interests like Channing Tatum and Megan Fox. As shown here in my mood board of my target audience.

2. Because I am going to be recording outside of the collage I am going to be using a flip cam and a microphone borrowed form Acland Burghley School. When finishing my recording I am going to be using Garage Band to put together my recording to create a professional clear radio package. I will also be using sound effects to create a realistic and interesting interview package, like jingles and other effects. I am going to be recording my radio interview at the St John ambulance Highgate division on Geisbach road.

3. With the research i have take on during this assessment I will be using skills such as, dressing for the occasion of the interview, using the right question types to the interviewer (e.g. Open, Closed, Multiple, Direct, short) Make sure that I speak with clarity when I talk making every question easy to understand as well as speaking confidently. Another skill is to make sure I stay on track, staying within my subject. Being prepared, planning a script of what I am going to say and address and what their is going to be included in the interview. I will also be using listening skills since since I am trying to grab information about this organisation. I ma going to be using a professional manner whilst interviewing my interviewees, having an appropriate mode of address. I will also be researching skills on how to calm an interviewee down by my tone of voice and questions. Also looking at how to stay focused when asking the different questions and the answers I start to pick up. For example in the 'Kiss FM' interview with Cher Lloyd their is conflict starting to arrive from a last encounter with the interviewer and interviewee. The interview would ask her certain  question and keep a clam tone when trying to calm her down and take her off the subject, which is successful.

4.

5.  I am going to be asking questions about the recruitment of younger people into the community of 'SJA'. Because I am interviewing a younger audience, I am going to be asking a range of short, open questions to listen to what they have to say about their time and enjoyments in St John Ambulance.  Asking what they enjoy most about this organization, why they believe that this is a good way to spend time. Asking the different age groups in my target audience will give me a variation of different answers, which will be good for an audience listening. I will be interviewing around 4-5 cadets in my division. James who is 15 and has been in 'SJA' for around 2 years, he has been on many camps and has collected many awards since his time in the organisation. India, she is 13 and is one of the youngest cadets in our division as well as one of the less experienced. Jerry who is 16 and has been with 'SJA'  for 3 years, also has been on many outings and has gained many awards for his efforts in 'SJA'. Megan who is one of the oldest cadets who has ben with the division since she was 13 also holding a rank as Sargent, leading drill and leading sessions.

6.  Watching many different examples of different interviews I learnt all the wrong and right things to look at and think about when putting together and watching different styles of interviews. Making sure that I am interviewing the right person, for example a person who is a member of St John Ambulance and who has been there for a while. Also to understand the way I am talking to this younger target audience, using a light hearted relaxed tone to make sure i set a comfortable atmosphere for the interviewee. For example Ellen from the Ellen show uses this humours light hearted approach when asking questions to her guests to create a comfortable feeling towards them and an audience watching.

7. Because of my position in the organisation as leading cadet  the difficulties are low because of my involvement with the officers and youth leaders in the division as well as working equipment in the location, i have access to different power spots and watch from indoor use that is free. But there are a few things that could disrupt my interview. For example at are normally meeting nights, which are on Mondays we could be having a special meeting where the target audience I want to interview will not turn up, or on the day we are doing an award ceremony, which stops me interviewing anyone on that day. There also might be trouble with the equipment, for example the cameras might run out of battery when at location of choice.

8. To make sure that these do not take place when I am trying to interview I will check the schedule of are division to check which days are easier for me to record and when everyone I would like to interview is available. I will also tell the whole division in advance so they know what days I would like them to turn up so they can be interviewed. Picking in advance a few people I would defiantly like to interview makes the flow of this radio package easier, knowing that I have a handful of people who I can talk it through with before hand. To make sure I have a backup with bringing different chargers with me and locating a power socket at my location. I will also test out a few audio recordings, testing out the background noise in the area i will be recording seeing where the best place to record will be. This will create sound balance to create a more professional and well planned radio package. I will also consider going in an extra day to make sure that i collect all my footage at a professional standard. Also to make sure that i catch all my interviewees  even thought they do not attend on the Monday.
